The Irish surname Bagot is believed to have descended from the Norman family named Bagod, who arrived in Ireland during the Anglo-Norman invasion led by Richard de Clare, better known as Strongbow, in 1170. The Bagods were initially granted lands in Kildare and Carlow, and their family motto, Antiquum Obtinens, meaning possessing the ancient, signifies their long-held possession of these lands.

One of the earliest recorded Bagod ancestors was Sir John Bagod of Baggotrath, who was recorded in 1288. The Bagods eventually Anglicized their name to Bagot, and over time, various branches of the Bagot family spread across Ireland, most notably in the region of Offaly.

During the Cromwellian period in the mid-17th century, the Bagots lost many of their lands due to their support for the Irish Catholic Confederation, a political and military alliance for the defence and liberation of Ireland. However, some members of the Bagot family managed to regain their properties, and their lineage continued to be recognized among Irish gentry.

The Bagot surname is thus deeply intertwined with Ireland's history, symbolic of both Norman conquest and Irish resistance, and continues to be recognized as a historic Irish family name.
