The surname Aungier is of Anglo-Norman Irish origin. The Aungier family was one of the many English families that came to Ireland during the Norman Invasion in the late 12th century. The family first settled in Dublin, where they became successful merchants and acquired a significant amount of property and land.

One of the most prominent members of the Aungier family was Francis Aungier, the 1st Baron Aungier of Longford, who was born in 1558. He served as Master of the Rolls in Ireland and was granted extensive lands in Longford and Dublin. He was later elevated to the peerage as Baron Aungier of Longford by Charles I in 1635.

The Aungier family held the title of Earl of Longford in the 18th century. They also held several other titles including Baronet Aungier, of Booterstown, and Baron Aungier, of Booterstown. However, the titles became extinct with the death of the 2nd Earl of Longford in 1702.

The Aungier family made significant contributions to the development and growth of Dublin in the 17th century. Aungier Street in Dublin is named after the family, showing their longstanding influence in Ireland.
