The surname Walker is of English and Scottish origin, derived from the occupation of a walker or cloth fuller. A walker was someone who cleaned and thickened raw cloth by beating it with wooden hammers or walking on it with their feet. This process was commonly used in the textile industry during the Middle Ages.

However, in the case of Irish surnames, Walker has a different origin. It is believed to have been adopted by some Irish families during the plantation of Ulster in the 17th century. This was a period when Scottish and English settlers were encouraged to move to Ireland and establish agricultural communities.

Many of the Scottish settlers in Ulster had surnames that were later anglicized. In the case of Walker, it is likely that some Scottish families with the surname Mac an Fhucadair, meaning "son of the fuller," adopted the anglicized version Walker.

Over time, the surname Walker spread throughout Ireland and became more common, particularly in Ulster. Today, there are many individuals of Irish descent with the surname Walker, both in Ireland and in countries with Irish diaspora populations.
