The surname Quinn, often spelled as O'Quinn in Irish, has a rich history rooted in Irish ancestry. It is derived from the Gaelic name Ó Cuinn, meaning descendant of Conn, where Conn refers to a personal name signifying chief or leader. The O'Quinns were a prominent sept (a kinship group) of the Dál gCais, an ancient tribal grouping in Ireland.

The O'Quinns were originally located in the region of Thomond (modern-day County Clare and parts of County Limerick) in western Ireland. They were part of the ruling elite, known as the Dál gCais, who held considerable power in the region. The most famous member of this clan was Brian Boru, who became the High King of Ireland in the 11th century.

Following the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century, the O'Quinns, like many other Gaelic families, faced significant challenges. The Norman influence led to the decline of Gaelic culture and forced many Irish families to adopt anglicized surnames. As a result, some O'Quinns dropped the O' prefix and became known simply as Quinn.

Over time, Quinn became a fairly common surname in Ireland, particularly in the provinces of Munster and Connacht. Many Irish emigrants also carried the Quinn surname to other parts of the world during times of mass migration, contributing to its prevalence in countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and beyond.

Today, Quinn remains a popular Irish surname, symbolizing the proud heritage and enduring legacy of the O'Quinn clan.
